Silent Brook

In the days before air-conditioning, people had to be creative in their quest to keep cool.  Park patrons would descend the stone stairway to sit on a stone bench to enjoy the natural air-conditioning found at the bottom.

Silent Brook originally had a roof over the top of the "well" to keep the sun off everyone in need of some relief from the heat.

There is little information as to who originally designed and built Silent Brook.  It is thought that the Civilian Conservation Corps were responsible for it's construction.  The CCC was a work relief program that was active during the Great Depression (1933 to 1942) to employ unmarried, unemployed men aged 18-25.  A CCC camp was stationed within the park (exact years unknown).
